Lake Guntersville Hydrofest
In anticipation of the 2018 return of Hydrofoil racing to Lake Guntersville, a test event was held featuring the U-27 Wiggins Racing Team, as well as the reigning National Championship U1 Miss HomeStreet Team and the Gale V: Vintage Unlimited Hydroplane replica.
It couldn't have been a more perfect day. With clear skies and no wind, there was barely a ripple on Lake Guntersville for the event.
The Downtown Merchants Association made sure there was plenty to do in the evening and the Historic Downtown Arts & Entertainment District was overrun during the evening performance at Errol Allen Park by The Joe Cagle Band, Mockingbird Lane, and Riley Green.
Although accounts differ on the exact beginning of boat racing on Lake Guntersville, the consensus has it in the late 30s - early 40s, with the last hydrofoil race taking place in 1985.
The Marshall County Visitors and Convention Bureau estimates between 30,000 and 60,000 people will converge on Lake City in 2018 for the official return of unlimited class hydrofoil racing.
Next years race will also feature other exciting water sports including a wakeboard exhibition with some of the top professional athletes competing in the industry today. Static displays, a boat show, food and fun including the appearance of one of the most famous boats in the history of the Unlimited Series, Miss Budweiser, will round out the festival in 2018.
